We are the world

We Are the World is a song by the American occasional formation USA for Africa. It appeared on the self-titled album from 1985 and was also released as a single that year. Proceeds from the single went to the victims of the famine in Ethiopia.

The initiative for We Are the World was taken by Harry Belafonte. He was inspired by Band Aid, who at the end of 1984 with Do They Know It's Christmas? also raised money for the famine. The song was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie and produced by Quincy Jones. Recording of the song took place at A&MRecords' studio on January 28, 1985.

You can see the making off movie on Netflix.

Action Learning session

During the afternoon program, we will break into six groups to engage in action learning dialogue with each other about what teaming can do for you and your organization.

The first step in the Action Learning process is to discover with each other as a team who sees an opportunity, challenge or problem related to the topic of Teaming within her own work environment. Choose one.

The person who contributed the opportunity, challenge or problem becomes the problem introducer. The problem contributor explains in a few minutes why he or she perceives this as an opportunity, challenge or problem.

The second step in the process is for the group to discover and learn to understand what the problem bringer really means. With stimulating, picture-forming questions, the group helps the problem bringer to think again. So no opinions, judgments or solutions at this stage! This step begins with an intervention on the problem bringer and then turns it into a team dialogue.

The third step is to get everyone's opinion on the table and from this opinion to come to a group judgment.

From the group judgment, the opportunity, challenge or problem is redefined. After consent on the redefinition, step four follows.

The fourth step involves discovering solution directions. The group members ask each other questions with the goal of arriving at relevant (new) insights that can be implemented as solutions.

Step five is for the problem contributor to make a choice about what his or her first step will be. The other team members also decide what they see as the first step in their own organization for whether or not to start using teaming.

Step six is "Reflection. What do you take away from this Action Learning session?

The concluding step before you return to the plenary part of the teaming event is to discuss with each other what you want to share with the other groups as learning moments, eye openers and first steps. Decide which of you will share the information with the other people in plenary. Now return to the plenary part.

The Action Learning session is facilitated by a WIAL Netherlands partner.

Book tip: Teaming

The importance of teams has been increasing over the past few decades. Over 85% of the workforce works in one or more teams simultaneously. Teams are also increasingly "fluid": they are constantly changing in form and composition.

Teaming enables fast, smart, smooth and decisive collaboration. Teaming is a soft skill that gets you rock-solid results. Teaming is the manifestation of the new reality of collaboration.
